“Space Pirates!”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford discussed the upcoming Star Wars series Skeleton Crew. It was revealed that the series will include…pirates.
“Those are pirates!” confirms Ford, “Space pirates.”
But wait, is that one pirate Steve Urkel? Yes, it is confirmed that Jaleel White will appear in the show as a “Space Pirate!” While I don’t expect White to break out in an Urkel voice, it could make sense, as Urkel was a character on one of the most popular family sitcoms on ABC, “Family Matters.” Those who grew up watching the show will get a thrill out of his appearance.
The creators also discussed the inspirations for including pirates in the series. “With the era we’re in, we’re kind of getting to play with that lawless thing,” says Ford. “The Empire is gone, and so we’re playing with a part of the galaxy that has a resurgence of piracy.”
The article states that Star Wars has a history of “Pirates,” even as recently as episodes of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
“Pirates are talked about so much in Star Wars,” Ford notes. “People would call Han Solo a pirate and he’d be like, ‘How dare you?’ And we’ve seen some awesome pirates in the animated shows. So this was something where both [executive producers] Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were really excited to do more pirate stuff.”
Since the series’ first announcement and trailer, many fans have started calling the show “Goonies in Space.” With these new pictures, including the image of Jude Law’s blaster looking like an old flintlock, the comparisons continue.
The series is directed at a younger audience, and I look forward to a more fun and light-hearted Star Wars series with a little underworld and Goonies feel.
