From Rivendell to Erebor: Honoring Tolkien Through Cosplay

“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

As someone who grew up obsessed by Tolkien’s stories, I’ve always considered Middle-earth the ultimate standard of fantasy, and it shaped my imagination, for anything that would help me enter that world, including Dungeons and Dragons, The Bakshi animation movies and more! That love only deepened in 2012, when I had the incredible opportunity to attend The Hobbit movie press conference in New York City, which included a one-on-one interview with Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield) and even a chance to ask Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf himself!) a question during a press panel.

Experiences like that remind me just how much Tolkien’s work resonates, but they also make it a little bittersweet that Lord of the Rings and Hobbit cosplay seems to appear less and less at conventions I attend each year. In a world overflowing with capes, power armor, and anime, spotting a Hobbit, Elf, or Dwarf feels like finding a rare treasure. Cosplay is a vital part of keeping these stories alive from one generation of fans to the next. So here are some amazing Middle-earth cosplayers who are doing just that.

“Hobbits” by Cosplayer Kairie

“One Thing I’ve Learned About Hobbits: They Are A Most Hearty Folk.” – Aragorn – In my opinion, the REAL heroes of The Lord of the Rings, I am always excited to see passionate fans representing the smallest of Tolkien’s warriors.

“Gimli” by Marilian Cosplay

I love the Dwarves, and there is no more famous Dwarf than Gimli, and he is shown in all his bearded glory by this talented cosplayer!

“Legolas” by Morgan_Trey

A favorite of my daughters, and other swooning fans of Middle-earth, Legolas is more than just a pretty Elf as this cosplayer shows.

“Sauron” by TENAI_Workshop

This cosplay exudes the menacing danger that is the ultimate Dark Lord, Sauron that would even make Darth Vader shake with fear.

“Gandalf the Grey” by Peer Kipke

It was this cosplayer and his many photos as Gandalf that inspired this article feature. Gandalf is my favorite character of all Tolkien’s stories and, like I told this cosplayer, other than Sir Ian himself, there is no better Gandalf around!

“Galadriel” by Silhouette Cosplay

Galadriel’s beauty is described as both profound and majestic, and this cosplayer has recreated this in a magical way!

“Thorin Oakenshield” by Hiszi

Thorin is another favorite having a very relatable story of loss and the need for revenge and that character became special to me after my experience in 2012 at The Hobbit movie press conference, where I was able to interview the “King under the mountain” himself, Richard Armitage for a fantasy site I used to work on.

“Thranduil” by Gin

This cosplay captures the Elven elegance of Thranduil perfectly and – Look at that hair!

“Arwen” Alyson Tabbitha

Both the cosplay and photography truly bring out the fantasy and beauty that is Arwen from the books and movies!

“Eowyn” by Lyhiana Lisa

“I am no Man!” is among the many epic speeches from the book and movies and this cosplay is both powerful and inspired of the ultimate shield maiden of Rohan!

“Arwen and Aragorn” by tasha yun and Dourdeno

The couple that cosplay together… have the most fun! The most famous “power couple” from Lord of the Rings are well represented here.
