By the Power of Grayskull: Remembering Iconic He-Man Toy Commercials

Masters of the Universe began in the early 1980s with Mattel’s toy line, with an exciting and powerful commercial campaign, and sparked new adventures both on the TV screen and in my backyard with the toys. He-Man quickly became an obsession. I owned several figures, vehicles (Attack Trak being my favorite), and of course, the source for He-Man’s powers, Castle Grayskull. Countless battles came to life between He-Man and Skeletor, while the animated series expanded the world of Eternia into something more. That love never ended, and to this day, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe remains one of my all-time favorite shows and toy lines.

Here are some of my favorite He-Man and the Masters of the Universe commercials that had me running to my parents (and Santa) for!

He-Man First Commercial MOTU

This is where it began for me! The powerful He-Man battling outside Castle Grayskull, against the evil forces of Skeletor! I was already creating adventures in my head and couldn’t wait to get my hands on everything in this commercial!

He-Man Castle Grayskull Commercial

To me, this was the “Millennium Falcon” of the Masters of the Universe toyline! Everyone wanted this set and when I opened this on Christmas day, I HAD THE POWER!

He-Man Snake Mountain

Not to be outdone by Castle Grayskull, Skeletor’s evil base of operation looked cool, but I was more of a “Good Guy kid.” The set still looked impressive and had the perfect balance of fun and evil darkness.

He-Man Trap Jaw Toy Commercial

This was my favorite “bad guy” character! I loved his scary, movable jaw and the interchangeable arms.

He-Man Commercial Man-E-Faces

Outside of He-Man and Man-at-Arms, Man-E-Faces was my favorite. His concept was very cool as he had three different faces that, in the cartoon, gave him specific abilities. I loved being able to “mix it up” with this guy!

Masters of the Universe Prince Adam & Orko

While I wasn’t a fan of Prince Adam, I was a fan of Orko. I never did own him as a kid but, I’m keeping my eyes open.

He-Man & the Masters of the Universe Land Shark

This was a “bad guy” vehicle and I was all about the “good guys” so I was never interested. That said, it is very cool and another example of the unique designs the series and toys had from anything else of that day.

Masters of the Universe Attak Trak Toy Ad

This was my favorite vehicle in the series. It was a little noisy but, I remember playing with this for hours or, when my Dad couldn’t take the sound anymore!

Masters of the Universe: He-man, Skeletor, Clawful & Fisto Toy

These commercials for the action figures were always the best. Kids, like me at the time, battling eachother with some of the most creative and fun character designs ever – even FISTO!
