“I thought it was impossible that I’d ever get to play Superman because it’s impossible that anybody would get to play Superman.”
I have to be honest. When it was first announced that Henry Cavill would be replaced in the role of Superman and David Corenswet would take up the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s reboot, I wasn’t thrilled. I was skeptical. But that initial villainous doubt has since been replaced by hope.
Corenswet has steadily won me over, not just through trailers and promo shots that capture him looking perfect as the Man of Steel, but through what he brings behind the scenes. With an impressive 40-pound muscle gain and standing at 6’4″, he put in the work to look the part. But even more important is how he seems to embody the spirit of Superman in real life — committed, kind, and genuinely so, both as an actor and as a family man.

One moment that stood out to me was a fun arm-wrestling video with Reece Feldman. While the rest of the cast brought their energy, it was Corenswet’s cool, collected charm that stole the show. With a calm smile, he barely moved while Feldman struggled to budge his arm, eventually ending the match. Classic Superman.

In the latest issue of People, which hits newsstands June 20th, Corenswet opens up about what it means to step into the iconic role and shares a glimpse of his life off-screen. It’s clear that the new Superman isn’t just flying high on-screen; he’s also grounded and genuine.
Superman premieres in theaters July 11th.
